cee-lo green – ‘no one’s gonna love you’

This new (very R-rated) video for Cee-Lo’s ‘No One’s Gonna Love You’ is a must-see. The imagery taken together with the track unlocks so much of the power, seduction and chaos wrapped up in explosive relationships. Watching the video sent me head over heels for the song (which is a Band of Horses cover, btw). Cee-Lo never ceases to keep you guessing as to his next musical direction. Get ready for his new album Cee-Lo Green is a Lady Killer debuting August 9.

robyn – ‘hang with me’

New material from Robyn is always a good bet to brighten up the week and she delivers once again! White-hot off the presses is her next single ‘Hang With Me’. While an acoustic version of the song was featured on Body Talk Pt. 1, her website notes this new version “has been suitably souped up and looks destined to follow its predecessor straight onto the dancefloors and radio playlists across the country!” You can grab a lo-fi version below to tide you over for now. Check it out on Body Talk Pt. 2 when it officially releases September 6.

example

Example is a UK rapper with a growing list of catchy jams. He’s released a few mix tapes here and there and helped tour in support of notable UK acts like Calvin Harris.

I stumbled upon his song ‘Watch the Sun Come Up’ several months ago and featured it in a blog post. That version of the song is a huge electro banger, but I think this latest acoustic studio version is even better. The piano line and strings are just wonderful. Perfect for a peaceful morning spent watching the sun come up. Enjoy. 🙂

kelis

Kelis’ new album Flesh Tone hit stores last week. Poor Kelis seems to be the perpetual also-ran of R&B pop divas. Come to think of it, aren’t they all, save for Beyonce? At least from a commercial standpoint. Amerie, Missy Elliott, Letoya, Kelly Rowland, Nicole Scherzinger. These chicks can’t buy a hit album.

This new album from Kelis is a full-on HOUSE explosion. It’s Europe, it’s full of rage, and it’s often fucking brilliant. When I first heard lead single ‘Acapella’ it seemed Kelis might be jumping on the dance music bandwagon without much new to contribute. Not the case. This isn’t Ke$ha in the ape caves with a glow-in-the-dark highlighter. She is storming the music scene as the new Grace Jones.

Clearly an album of catharsis following her divorce from Nas, Flesh Tone is a nine-part emancipation doctrine funneled through speakers and bass. Check out highlight track ‘Brave’ below. Deep, introspective emotions played out as dance floor haikus. Synth & Synthability.

If you like her new direction as much as I do, grab the album and check her out on tour with the incomparable Robyn!

monsieur adi

Monsieur Adi has made a name for himself over the last several months by remixing  up-and-coming interweb darlings like Frankmusik and Ellie Goulding. In a short period of time the french producer/musician/composer has established a signature sound that is uniquely his own. Adi takes his wonderful little gems of inspiration and recasts them as orchestral pop re-imagined on a grand scale. Gorgeous, sometimes heartbreaking stuff. To make amphitheater-scale soundscapes seem effortless is a true talent. Check out two of his best below.

sky ferreira

Get to know the name Sky Ferreira. This barely legal L.A. singer is about to pop in a big way. Sky has been working her digital hustle for a while now, popping up on social media and blog channels with impressive remixes and guest spots. Her efforts paid off this year when EMI officially snatched her up and now she’s working with big time producers like Bloodshy & Avant. Look for her album out later this year.

For now you can take a big ‘ol bite out of her official debut single ‘One’. I love the direction they’re taking her with this track. It’s very Marina & the Diamonds inspired with a perfect cross between glitchy tech blips and orchestral strings. Looking forward to more!

scissor sisters

The recently released album by the Scissor Sisters is, predictably, twelve songs of questions to which the answer is always YES. Night Work continues the Sisters’ string of great albums. Some call it one note. I call it a pretty great goddamn note.

Check out my two faves from the album below. ‘Any Which Way’ is a full-on disco hurricane.  Jake Shears spits out the lyrics so quickly, it’s basically one word sentences. “Yabettatakemeanywhichwayyacan!” When Ana Matronoic chimes in with her brilliant spoken word bridge (dedicated to panty hose eggs and bottle tans, of course) you’d better be dancing.

‘Running Out’ is equal amounts of fun. The feeling is something akin to a musical montage from a classically cheesy 80’s movie. Like the big cookie-selling scene in Troop Beverly Hills or that one from Nine to Five where they loosened up the office while filling that warehouse up with stuff to incriminate Dabney Coleman. Lots of mashed potato-ing and ‘turning the beat around’.

Support good pop music and check out their  tour dates for this fall and grab the rest of the album!

mashup magic

These right here are the cuts. Classically gangsteriffic tracks put together and done made even gangster-er. How that could be possible, I don’t know. It just is. Get your swagger on in the sunshine. Feels just like magic.

covermania, pt. 2

Supes sorry for the delay in posting. The summer has just been too much fun! Sitting down in front of the keyboard hasn’t been an enticing option recently.

I’m hoping to post more on the regular, but here’s a fatty reward for your patience. Check out these ayyymazing cover songs below. I can’t even call one out in particular; they’re all that wonderful.

I’ll be back soon! “I hope not sporadically!”

over the top POP

Can we tawlk?

Sometimes all we need is the musical equivalent of a big ‘ol calorie-fest. Maybe on those days when it’s ‘enough already!’ and you’ve got a run in your hose or a coffee stain on your shirt, the boss is really riding you, etc and more things. Some of MY fave medicine is a dose of straight forward, out of control, dumbin’ out, sing-along eardrum indulgence.

(Eat these, honey.)
